Tsumiki by Kengo Kuma

December 12, 2015

In collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto’s forest conservation organization More Trees, architect Kengo Kuma has designed a set of triangular-shaped modular pieces. Called Tsumiki, a name that means ‘wooden blocks’ in Japanese,  the individual components can be stacked and assembled in a variety of ways, allowing the user to create original sculptures.

Tsumiki will soon be available to buy in Japan.

Spiraling Jewelry Organizer by Hitonari

November 22, 2015

This carefully crafted organizer for jewelry and accessories asked three questions in the design process: Can it be accessible from and angle? Can it be easy to move and transport? Can it be durable while achieving the first two objectives?

While the form can be compact, solid oak trays can be rotated giving the piece a certain adaptive and sculptural quality. A solid base keeps the piece bottom-heavy so there is no need to worry about it tipping or falling.

The Land of Giants by Choi + Shine Architects

October 3, 2015

The Land of Giants, an original proposal for Landsnet, transforms mundane electrical pylons into statues on the Icelandic landscape.

Making only minor alterations to well-established steel framed tower design, Choi + Shine Architects have created a series of towers that are iconic and will become monuments in any landscape. Seeing the figures becomes unforgettable, elevating electrical towers to something more than purely functional.

The Architecture of Burning Man 2015

September 13, 2015

With the unofficial end of summer also comes the close of Burning Man, a radical annual festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert drawing together artsy folk, techies, celebrities, and this year, even a plague of insects. Each year from the last week of August to Labor Day, festival goers erect a temporary city of sorts filled with fantastical installations and a giant wooden effigy that would be set aflame. Call it fun, profound, or insufferably hipster, but this year, drawing some 70,000 attendees overall, the event sure gave rise to some incredible design and architecture—a few gorgeous snaps from Bjarke Ingels are just the start.

Paperholm by Charles Young

August 23, 2015

One year ago, artist Charles Young took on a project that would take him exactly 365 days to complete. Just the other day (August 10, 2015) he finally finished. What did he do? He spent a year creating paper sculptures, one a day, and shared them all on his Tumblr page titled Paperholm. Each model was constructed using 220gsm watercolour paper and PVA glue.
