The Self-Playing Xylophone Staircase of Hokkaido

October 12, 2015

This beautiful advertisement was created by Japanese Agency Drill Inc. who built a giant wooden xylophone (reportedly over 1 mile long) in the middle of a forest in Hokkaido, Japan. The notes were made up of Bach's Cantata 147.

Penta Lamp by Anon Pairot

October 3, 2015

Cassava is one of the crops that is being cultivated the most in Thailand and during certain times of the year, farmers face an excessive supply of it, causing a huge amount of waste and pollution. Wanting to find a solution to this problem and a use for all the waste material, designer Anon Pairot created ‘Penta’, a pendant lamp that carries an aesthetic value and is environmentally friendly.

The modular components create no waste and optimize the form which references the cassava leafs themselves. Further, any defective or damaged part can be reprocessed and blended into a new lamp.

Superiscope by Pedro Barata

October 3, 2015

The Superiscope – described by the architect as the world's biggest periscope – offers visitors views across Lagoa Santa, a lagoon that gives its name to the Brazilian city it is located beside.

The giant instrument's shell is made from the corrugated steel exterior of a shipping container. Inside, two large mirrors are attached to an MDF framework and set at a 45-degree angle at the top and bottom of the structure. Light reflected off the pair of mirrors allows a viewer at the bottom to see the image framed at the top.

The Land of Giants by Choi + Shine Architects

October 3, 2015

The Land of Giants, an original proposal for Landsnet, transforms mundane electrical pylons into statues on the Icelandic landscape.

Making only minor alterations to well-established steel framed tower design, Choi + Shine Architects have created a series of towers that are iconic and will become monuments in any landscape. Seeing the figures becomes unforgettable, elevating electrical towers to something more than purely functional.

Plumb Furniture Series by Sehun Oh

September 26, 2015

After seeing the classic 606 shelving system by dieter rams, Sehun Oh sought to incorporate its modular design elements into his ‘plumb furniture series’. The pieces use three different variations of angled connectors: 83°, 90° and 97° to create a rigid structure while allowing the user to modify each work to its specific context. The connectors are manufactured via injected mould processes creating durable joints suitable for daily use.

Fairyland Guorui Villas by UNStudio

September 26, 2015

The Fairyland Guorui Villa complex is situated on a plot where two rivers converge, surrounded by natural scenery and mountain views. Essential to the design approach for the villa development is the combination of individuality with a distinct quality of community.

The facades of the villas are designed to create a strong inside/outside condition. In order to achieve this different ‘sets’ of integrated features, including balconies, bay windows, canopies or terraces and roof-top gardens are used. The facade cladding is made from recycled stone produced from powdered stone applied to the facade in contemporary fashion.

The Architecture of Burning Man 2015

September 13, 2015

With the unofficial end of summer also comes the close of Burning Man, a radical annual festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert drawing together artsy folk, techies, celebrities, and this year, even a plague of insects. Each year from the last week of August to Labor Day, festival goers erect a temporary city of sorts filled with fantastical installations and a giant wooden effigy that would be set aflame. Call it fun, profound, or insufferably hipster, but this year, drawing some 70,000 attendees overall, the event sure gave rise to some incredible design and architecture—a few gorgeous snaps from Bjarke Ingels are just the start.

Fist-Bump Crosswalk buttons by Alfredo Adan Roses

September 13, 2015

Want to cross the street with authority? Try using the “Walkbump,” a crosswalk button you activate by pounding it with your meaty fist.

Designer Alfredo Adan Roses made silicon molds of his hand and recently epoxied them to crosswalk poles around Los Angeles. To judge from video footage, people were quick to bond with the artificial fists, knocking them. The fist-shaped crosswalk activator begs you to give it some love.
